“The Ladybird” was inspired by the countless trail walks my dog and I have taken around Ladybird Lake (aka Town Lake) in Austin, TX.

I constantly found myself going straight from the trail to bopping into boutiques, brunch or bubbly (oh my!).

Even if I did have time to zip home for a quick-change, more times than not, I’d run out of the house totally forgetting to switch my Amazon fanny for a cuter purse. Nothing says chic like a new sundress from Ref, my fav extra-tall Tecovas and… that dang trustee trail baggie in all it’s black waterproof polyester and plastic buckle glory.

I wanted to hop on the needlepoint bag train, but I couldn’t find anything zip-able and sturdy enough to actually be a usable item in my daily life.

The Ladybird is designed for versatility – sling it across your back for a dog walk and simply swap the hooks to bop into brunch. (If you’re in ATX, may I recommend Tiny Boxwoods? Those chocolate chip cookies… IYKYK!)”

The Inspiration

how do I stitch the ladybird

A: IN-HAND

Simply stick your hand in and out of the zippered area. Certainly a project for more intermediate/advanced stitchers, but surprisingly not too different than stitching a traditional canvas in-hand.

What will fit in The Ladybird?

A: EVERYTHING?

Small, but mighty roomy. Even an iPhone Pro Max easily slides in and out without any need for a game of Tetris. Mary Poppins would totally approve!

How hard is making my own design?

A: Steep learning curve, but totally possible!

I had never tried Stitchly before either and after an evening of binging tutorials on TikTok, I came up with the Westie design you see on this red sample in the photos. While the app was a learning process, it’s nothing a stubborn DIY girly can’t handle.

Alternatively, you can phone a friend!
Most local needlepoint stores can help you create a custom chart.

Is The Ladybird for beginners?

A: Honestly, no.

I would not recommend this as someone’s first project.
